I went skim boarding yesterday down by the pier. The skimming was
pretty lame, but there was another skim boarder there riding exactly the
same kind of carbon fiber board as mine. He was much better than me I have
to admit. I think it helps to be young and very thin. What really
impressed was that after a while he gave up on skimming and paddled out on
his skim board to where the surfers were lined up and started catching and
riding waves just like he was another surfer.
This gave me the idea that I might like to try riding my skim board
like a body board-- I doubt that I would ever be able to stand up on it
like this guy was. So I paddled out and caught a few waves riding prone on
my skim board, and I found it to be much more maneuverable and faster than
my body board. So now I really only need to take this one board to the
beach.
Later I moved to a spot on the north side of the breakwater at Windward
street. The south side is for surf boards only and the line-up is usually
pretty crowded. On the north side there are no surfers or body boarders
because the waves break extremely close to the beach-- perfect skim
boarding waves. Here I was able to get to the waves and do wraps and some
small airs.
